Luis G. Fernandez, MD
Dr. Fernandez is the Director of Trauma Surgery and the Trauma Surgeon-in chief for Trinity Mother Frances Health System in Tyler, Texas. He is the Chairman for the Division of Trauma Surgery and Surgical Critical Care, Chief Flight Surgeon and the Chief of Combined Critical Care Units at Trinity Mother Frances Hospital. He is Board Certified in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care, Forensic Traumatology and Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder. Dr. Fernandez is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery and Family Practice at the University of Texas Health Center at Tyler.
Dr. Fernandez completed his MD at the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara in Mexico. Dr. Fernandez obtained his residency training at Loyola University, the University of Illinois, the University of Chicago and Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois, with special training in Trauma and Burns at King’s County Hospital, SUNY Down State System, Brooklyn, New York, NY. Dr. Fernandez is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Chest Physicians, the American College of Critical Care Medicine, The International College of Surgeons, The American Society of Abdominal Surgeons, and the Inter-American College of Physicians and Surgeons, among others. He is a member of The Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, The American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, The American Burn Association, The Texas Surgical Society, the Texas Medical Association, to name a few.
Dr. Fernandez is well published in multiple areas of research both in peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, and has made numerous oral and poster presentations at national and international conferences. Dr. Fernandez is a highly decorated Texas Medical Ranger, and a retired Brigadier General in the Texas State Guard and was the Commander of the Texas State Guard Medical Brigade from 2005-2014. Dr. Fernandez has been the Trauma Medical Director at Trinity Mother Frances Hospital, Tyler, Texas, for over 23 years (the longest continuously serving trauma director in East Texas). Dr. Fernandez has been a leader and strong advocate of Trauma / Acute Care Surgery / Surgical Critical Care, Disaster Preparedness and Public Health in the State of Texas. Dr. Fernandez has dedicated his life to providing timely, compassionate and effective lifesaving care to those in need.
